After years of construction and anticipation, Geelong’s landmark waterfront convention precinct is officially open, giving Victoria’s second-largest city a major new drawcard for conferences, exhibitions and large-scale events.
The $449 million Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre opened this week, transforming a prominent stretch of Geelong’s waterfront into what is now the largest events and convention facility in regional Victoria.
Designed in collaboration with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, the centre combines contemporary event facilities with a strong connection to place. The name Nyaal Banyul reflects that partnership and adds a significant cultural dimension to one of the state’s biggest recent infrastructure projects.
The venue is expected to reshape Geelong’s visitor economy, attracting interstate and international delegates while boosting demand for local accommodation, hospitality and tourism businesses.
Inside, the centre features a 1,000-seat theatre, exhibition halls, conference and meeting spaces, flexible event venues, food and beverage outlets and the new public gathering space known as Gheringhap Plaza. Next door, a 200-room Crowne Plaza hotel provides accommodation for conference delegates and event visitors.
The impact is already being felt. The centre is scheduled to begin hosting events from next month and has already secured around 80 conferences and events, giving Geelong a packed calendar before its doors have even fully swung open.
Beyond tourism, the project has delivered significant economic benefits during construction. More than 1,400 jobs were created, including opportunities for 250 apprentices who completed over 150,000 hours of training. More than 50 local businesses are also expected to play a role in supplying events, food, wine and services at the venue moving forward.
For locals keen to take a look inside, the precinct will host a free Community Open Day on Saturday 11 July, offering a chance to explore the new waterfront destination before the first major events get underway.
