Some albums never lose their power, no matter how much time passes. Twenty years after its release, The Greatest remains one of the defining records of the 2000s, and this summer Cat Power is bringing the landmark album back to Australian stages with a run of special anniversary performances.
Presented by Love Police, the tour will see Cat Power, the recording moniker of acclaimed singer-songwriter Chan Marshall, perform The Greatest in full, alongside a selection of songs drawn from her remarkable catalogue spanning more than three decades.
In Victoria, she’ll play two shows. You can catch her at Costa Hall in Geelong on Wednesday 2 December and at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne on Thursday 2 December.
Originally released in 2006, The Greatest found Marshall heading to Memphis to record with members of the legendary Hi Rhythm section. The result was a soulful, deeply affecting collection of songs that wrapped heartbreak, resilience and longing in warm Southern grooves. Two decades later, its emotional pull remains as strong as ever.

From the understated beauty of Living Proof to the aching title track, the album has earned its place as a modern classic. Rather than relying on grand gestures, The Greatest quietly draws listeners in, delivering moments of vulnerability that linger long after the music stops.
The anniversary celebrations extend beyond the stage, with Matador Records set to release a special 20th anniversary edition of the album on 10 July. The reissue will feature a limited edition reproduction of the original pink foil artwork along with a pink vinyl pressing for collectors and longtime fans.
The tour will take in major cities across Australia and New Zealand, including a stop in Geelong and a visit to the nation’s capital. It’s a rare chance to experience one of contemporary music’s most captivating performers revisiting the album that helped define her career.
There are few artists capable of creating the kind of atmosphere Marshall brings to a live performance, making these intimate summer shows a must for longtime fans and newcomers alike.
