Three decades after releasing one of the defining Australian albums of the 1990s, You Am I are revisiting Hourly Daily in a way fans have never heard before.
The beloved Australian rock band has announced STRUNG UP, a special run of east coast performances celebrating the 30th anniversary of their landmark 1996 album. The tour will see the band perform reimagined arrangements from Hourly Daily alongside career-spanning favourites, accompanied by a string quartet in some of the country’s most prestigious concert venues.
Melbourne fans will have two chances to experience the show when STRUNG UP arrives at the Melbourne Recital Centre on 5 and 6 November.
Originally released in 1996, Hourly Daily debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart and remains one of the most celebrated records in Australian rock history. Its mix of sharp storytelling, melodic hooks and distinctly local character helped cement You Am I’s place among the country’s most influential bands.
Rather than simply recreating the album, STRUNG UP will explore its songs through a fresh orchestral lens while also drawing from the band’s extensive catalogue of classics and deep cuts.
Frontman Tim Rogers said the collaboration with a string quartet felt like a natural extension of the band’s long history of experimentation.
“Our peculiar brand of musical thuggery has oft been blessed by instrumental finery. Working with musicians of less traditional RnR stripe is thrilling and invigorating. Pomp and circumstance with our grubby thumping heart pushing the bunch of us forever onward.”
The anniversary celebrations will also include a vinyl reissue of Hourly Daily, alongside Dailies, Seconds, a collection of 14 B-sides and demos from the era, due for release in October.
With intimate venues, orchestral arrangements and one of Australia’s most cherished albums at its heart, STRUNG UP promises to be a unique chapter in the You Am I story.
