You don’t need a passport or a 20-hour flight to celebrate Canada Day this year. On Wednesday 1 July, Docklands’ riverside Wharf Hotel is transforming into a little slice of Canada, with a full day of themed food, music and entertainment running from 11am until 11pm.
The free event will bring together some of the country’s most recognisable cultural exports, from comfort food favourites and iconic musicians to a healthy dose of playful Canadiana.
One of the day’s biggest drawcards will be a live tribute band performing hits from Canadian artists including Nickelback and Sum 41. The performance will take place from 4.30pm to 7.30pm, before live music continues into the evening.
Those keen to fully embrace the theme can enter the Justin Bieber and Avril Lavigne Lookalike Competition. The winner will score a dining experience in one of The Wharf Hotel’s popular Winter Glasshouses overlooking the Yarra River, complete with a lounge or dining package. Face painting will also be available from 6pm to 8pm for anyone wanting to add a Canadian-inspired touch to their look.
The celebrations extend beyond the stage, with arcade games, corn hole and a range of lucky door prizes up for grabs throughout the day, including Canada Day beanies, dining vouchers, Canadian Club packs and chocolate fondue experiences.
Food is also taking centre stage, with a special menu featuring poutine, chicken wings, broccoli wings, lobster rolls, maple bacon burgers, hot dogs and the iconic Canadian sweet treat, Beaver Tails. Drinks include Bloody Caesars made with authentic Clamato juice, a staple of Canadian cocktail culture.
With Melbourne enjoying a significant time difference over Toronto, locals will get a head start on Canada’s national day while enjoying waterfront views and a packed program of entertainment.
Canada Day at The Wharf Hotel takes place on Wednesday 1 July from 11am to 11pm at 18/38 Siddeley Street, Docklands. Entry is free, but registrations are required.
