Australian rock legend Jimmy Barnes will bring decades of iconic anthems to Phillip Island this October, with the Cold Chisel frontman announced as the headline performer for what is expected to be the final MotoGP event at the famous circuit.
Barnes will take to the stage as the sun sets over the Bass Coast on Saturday 24 October, delivering a career-spanning performance featuring some of the biggest songs in Australian music history, including Working Class Man and Flame Trees.
The performance will form part of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix weekend, with fans able to enjoy Barnes’ live show as part of their Saturday ticket. Island Passes start from $75 for adults, giving visitors the chance to experience a full day of world-class racing before finishing with one of Australia’s most celebrated performers.
The two-time ARIA Hall of Fame inductee returns to the MotoGP event for the first time in more than 30 years, having previously performed at the race’s temporary Eastern Creek home in 1993 during his Sweat It Out tour.
Barnes said the combination of motorcycles and live music made the event a natural fit.
“There’s something magical that happens when you put fast motorbikes and fast music on the same bill. The event can turn into something that moves the senses. MotoGP audiences and myself go way back, since Wayne Gardner took me for a spin around Phillip Island so many years ago, and to get the opportunity to play at the Island’s final GP will be a huge honour.”
Minister for Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos said the event would create a memorable experience for fans while supporting the Bass Coast region.
“It’s great to have Aussie rock legend Jimmy Barnes heading to Phillip Island for the MotoGP. Bringing together world-class motorsport and one of Australia’s most iconic live performers is a fantastic result for fans and for the Bass Coast region.”
Australian Grand Prix Corporation Chief Executive Officer Travis Auld said Barnes was the ideal artist to help mark the occasion.
“Jimmy Barnes is an Australian icon and there’s no better place to see him perform than trackside at Phillip Island. We’re excited to give fans the opportunity to celebrate the event alongside one of Australia’s greatest live performers.”
Catch-a-Coach services will also be extended after the performance, allowing fans to stay longer and enjoy the atmosphere before departing the circuit.
