A major restoration project is underway to secure one of Phillip Island’s most important access points, with the Victorian Government beginning a $50 million upgrade of the San Remo Bridge.
Also known as the Phillip Island Bridge, the crossing connects San Remo and Newhaven and plays a vital role for locals, visitors and businesses, carrying around 3.5 million tourists and up to 15,000 vehicles each day.
The works will focus on improving the bridge’s long-term durability and ensuring the connection remains reliable for future generations. Construction is expected to continue until mid-2028, with the bridge remaining open for vehicles and pedestrians throughout the project.
To support the restoration works, a temporary 62.5-tonne mass limit will apply to heavy vehicles crossing the bridge from Monday 3 August until late 2026. Passenger vehicles, grocery deliveries and essential services will continue as normal, while marine access beneath the bridge will remain available.
Heavy vehicle operators are encouraged to check current restrictions through the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s National Network Map before travelling.
The restoration is a technically complex project, with works being carefully managed to minimise impacts on the surrounding marine environment and local wildlife.
