One of Melbourne’s most iconic live music venues is turning 30. The Corner Hotel in Richmond is marking the milestone with six weeks of gigs, free events and celebrations featuring some of the artists who have helped shape its remarkable history.
Running throughout October, the ’30 Years Young’ program brings together Australian music legends, rising stars, promoter takeovers and community events, celebrating a venue that has become synonymous with Melbourne’s live music culture since reopening as a dedicated band room in 1995.
Leading the anniversary lineup are Melbourne punk favourites Bodyjar, whose performance comes full circle after playing the very first show when The Corner reopened three decades ago. They’ll be joined by acclaimed singer-songwriter Meg Washington, alternative rock pioneers Underground Lovers, indie rock outfit The Buoys and guitarist Harts.
One of the standout events will see The Engine Room & Special Guests reunite founding Hunters & Collectors members Barry Palmer, Jack Howard, Doug Falconer and John Archer for a one-night-only performance celebrating 40 years since the release of the band’s landmark album Human Frailty.
The birthday celebrations also extend beyond the band room, with takeover events curated by I OH YOU, Good Music x UNIFIED and Love Police, alongside Cheersquad Records’ Chicksquad showcase featuring an impressive lineup of Australian artists.
Across five consecutive Saturdays, Young Henrys will host free Front Bar performances from Tentendo, Milly Strange, Lucky, Garage Sale and Kingswood. Visitors can also enjoy free DJ sets, The Corner Rewind trivia, Drag Bingo, Country Struts boot scooting classes and other special events throughout the anniversary program.
Adding to the celebrations, The Corner Hotel has partnered with Carlton Draught to release a limited-edition merchandise collection inspired by the venue’s instantly recognisable band room carpet, including a sweater, beanie, socks and bar runner.
Tickets for all shows are on sale now. with the program promising plenty more unforgettable nights at one of Melbourne’s most beloved live music institutions.
