One of Australia’s most iconic films is making the leap from the big screen to the theatre, with The Castle set to premiere as a live stage production in Melbourne from March 2027.
Announced by Michael Cassel Group and Working Dog, the new theatrical adaptation will open at Her Majesty’s Theatre, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the beloved Australian film. The production will bring the Kerrigan family’s unforgettable fight to save their home to a whole new generation, while staying true to the humour, heart and unmistakable Australian spirit that made the original a classic.
The stage adaptation has been written by the film’s original creators, Rob Sitch, Tom Gleisner, Santo Cilauro and Jane Kennedy, who are also serving as co-producers. Alongside the familiar characters and memorable moments, the new production will feature fresh jokes and contemporary references to keep the story relevant for today’s audiences.
Direction comes from Paige Rattray, whose recent credits include Netflix’s Heartbreak High and the award-winning musical Fangirls. Set and costume design will be led by AACTA Award-winning designer Jonathon Oxlade, known for his work on Girl Asleep, Into the Woods and Bluey’s Big Play.
Producer Michael Cassel said bringing The Castle to the stage felt like a natural fit, describing the film as a story that captures both uniquely Australian life and universal themes of family, resilience and standing up for what matters. He said experiencing those emotions together in a theatre would create something truly special.
The original creators said they had wanted to adapt The Castle for the stage for more than 25 years, using the opportunity to update the script while preserving the warmth, humour and “the vibe” that audiences have loved for decades.
