Melbourne is set for a dose of Jazz Age glamour, with a lavish new stage production of The Great Gatsby arriving at Her Majesty’s Theatre for a limited summer season from 22 January 2027.
Presented by Shake & Stir Theatre Co, the production will transform the historic theatre into the world of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s celebrated novel, promising extravagant parties, cinematic staging and a story of romance, ambition and obsession.
Set in New York in 1922, The Great Gatsby follows mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby, whose lavish Long Island parties attract the wealthy and fashionable. Behind the champagne and excess, however, Gatsby is driven by his desire to rekindle his romance with Daisy Buchanan.
As newcomer Nick Carraway becomes drawn into Gatsby’s world, the glamour begins to unravel, exposing the darker side of wealth, privilege and the pursuit of the American Dream.
Directed by Nick Skubij, the production follows an acclaimed Queensland premiere staged in collaboration with Queensland Theatre Company. The stage adaptation is by Nelle Lee and Daniel Evans.
Shake & Stir Co-Artistic Director Ross Balbuziente said Melbourne’s summer atmosphere made it an ideal setting for the production.
“There’s something incredibly exciting about bringing The Great Gatsby to Melbourne at the height of summer. The city is already buzzing with energy, people are dressing up, going out and celebrating, and we want to give them a theatrical experience that matches that atmosphere.”
The Melbourne season marks another major production for Shake & Stir, which has previously reimagined literary classics including Frankenstein, 1984 and GRIMM.
Casting announcements are expected in the coming weeks. The Great Gatsby opens at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 22 January 2027 for a strictly limited season. Tickets go on sale from 10am Friday 6 November via Ticketek. Visit Her Majesty’s Theatre for details
