Chadstone is getting ready to welcome thousands of furry patients, with the much-loved Teddy Bear Hospital returning on 22 and 23 August.
Now in its twelfth year, the annual event invites children to bring along their favourite teddy bears for a playful introduction to the world of healthcare, with more than 2,000 teddy patients expected to be triaged across the weekend.
Held on the Lower Ground Level outside David Jones, the event will transform the shopping centre into a miniature healthcare precinct, with more than 700 University of Melbourne students helping children and their bears navigate everything from triage and X-rays to dental checks, music therapy and even a teddy bear ambulance ride.
Beyond the fun, Teddy Bear Hospital is designed to help children feel more comfortable and confident around healthcare settings, while giving trainee healthcare professionals valuable experience communicating with young patients and their families.
University of Melbourne Professor Paul Monagle, Honorary Paediatric Haematologist at The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, said the Teddy Bear Hospital gives children the opportunity to explore healthcare in a safe, engaging and playful environment.
“At the same time, it provides our health care students with valuable experience communicating with young patients and their families while fostering trust and confidence in healthcare,” he said.
The event also raises money for The Royal Children’s Hospital through the Good Friday Appeal, with organisers hoping to raise more than $50,000 this year. Over the past 11 years, more than 30,000 teddy bear patients have taken part.
A dedicated Sensory Hour will also return, offering reduced attendance, lower noise levels and softened lighting for children with additional needs and their families.
Tickets are available from $20 for one child or $30 for families booking in advance, with walk-up appointments also available.
