Spiegel Haus is kicking off its second season with Jerry Springtime, a wild new comedy show transforming its newly expanded Black Box Theatre into a mock TV studio inspired by the infamous Jerry Springer Show.
Running from 1 to 3 October, the show will open the new 450-seat theatre after interior walls were knocked down to create a larger performance space. It will also feature as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival program.
Created by Guy Cunningham, Jerry Springtime first appeared at Culture Jam’s The Town Festival in 2024, where audiences reportedly queued for hours chanting “Jerry, Jerry!” before filling three sessions.
The revamped production takes that original concept and throws it into the chaos of modern culture, with a rotating cast of 35 comedians, improvisers, circus performers, clowns and professional weirdos.
“In a world that is increasingly polarised, what better solution than to throw them all on one stage and let Jerry sort them out?” Guy says, tongue firmly in cheek.
Adding to the unpredictability, performers will not find out which roles they are playing until just one hour before showtime. The result is designed to keep each performance spontaneous, with freshly improvised scenes and plenty of opportunities for things to go spectacularly off-script.
Cunningham recently released the TV series “Who’s Speaking Please?”, which reached #5 among CTV+’s most-watched shows, while Culture Jam’s Michael Scarlett brings festival experience to the production.
Jerry Springtime runs from 7.30pm to 9.30pm each night, including an interval, with tickets ranging from $40 to $50 depending on seating.
