A brand-new IMAX with laser cinema is opening at Melbourne Central in late 2025—just in time for the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash. It’s the first of up to five new IMAX cinemas rolling out across Australia announced today as part of a partnership between Hoyts and IMAX.
This new setup isn’t just another screen – it’s a next-gen viewing experience. IMAX with Laser is all about sharper images, deeper contrast, and sound that hits you in the chest. Think crystal-clear 4K visuals, booming audio and the kind of colour range that makes space battles and sweeping landscapes feel like they’re happening around you.
“As the pioneer of IMAX screens in multiplex cinema in Australia, HOYTS is delighted to partner with IMAX again,” says HOYTS CEO Damien Keogh. “Our foundation site at Melbourne Central will be open for Avatar: Fire and Ash, with more sites to be announced shortly.”
“Australia continues to be a priority for IMAX,” adds IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond. “HOYTS is an exceptional, well-established exhibitor… and we’re looking forward to getting back in business with the company.”
This announcement follows on from a previous one that an IMAX cinema will open at Fountain Gate in partnership with Village Cinemas late in 2025.
