A new cinema format promising sharper visuals and more immersive sound has arrived in the CBD, with HOYTS launching its APEX experience at Melbourne Central.
The upgrade centres on a massive LED screen stretching more than 21 metres wide, replacing traditional projection with direct-view technology designed to deliver brighter images, deeper blacks and stronger contrast. It marks the Victorian debut of the format, following an earlier rollout in Western Australia.
HOYTS says the move is about lifting the standard cinema experience, particularly as audiences look for something that feels distinct from watching at home. The Melbourne Central site has been positioned as the flagship for the technology.

Unlike standard cinema setups, the APEX screen is acoustically transparent, meaning sound travels through the screen itself rather than from speakers around it. The idea is to better match audio with what is happening on screen, reducing the disconnect that can sometimes occur in large auditoriums.

HOYTS is lining up several major releases to showcase the format, including Michael, The Devil Wears Prada 2, Mortal Kombat II and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.
