Mornington’s waterfront has a fresh new focal point, with the upgraded Mornington Fishermans Jetty now officially open after an $18 million rebuild.
The rebuilt jetty includes new timber decking, solar lighting and seating made from materials salvaged from the original structure.
Berthing capacity has also expanded, with space now available for up to 27 vessels. Access ladders along the lower landings are designed to make the jetty easier and safer to use for a wider range of visitors.
Work is still underway at nearby Hampton Pier, which is being reconstructed with a steel piled design that will be topped with timber decking to retain the familiar look of the former structure. A new 24 metre pontoon will extend the pier into deeper water and include a gangway ramp and floating platform. The Hampton project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Both upgrades were shaped through consultation with local groups and users, reflecting the strong community connection to the region’s piers.
“I’m excited to announce the new Mornington Fishermans Jetty is open for the local community and tourists to enjoy,” said Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne.
“Mornington is a popular tourist destination and home to a vibrant bayside community and the completion of works at this jetty will ensure locals and visitors can continue to enjoy safe access for fishing, boating and recreation.”
