Victorians will be able to travel for free on trains, trams and buses for a full month, with the state government announcing a temporary measure aimed at easing pressure from rising fuel costs thanks to Donald Trump’s war in Iran.
From Tuesday 31 March until the end of April, all public transport services across Victoria will be free to use, including metro and V/Line networks. The move is designed as a short-term response to cost of living pressures, with the government set to monitor conditions over the coming weeks.
Premier Jacinta Allan said the decision was about immediate relief for households feeling the pinch. “As Premier, I’m determined to do everything within my control to help Victorians deal with rising fuel prices,” Ms Allan said.
Passengers won’t have to touch on with a myki during the free period, with station gates to be left open and ticket machines not charging fares. Those with existing myki passes will be able to pause their pass or request a refund through the call centre.
The initiative is expected to drive a noticeable increase in public transport use, particularly during peak periods. Officials say the current network is equipped to handle the extra demand following recent service expansions, though commuters should still expect busier conditions.
“This is a temporary measure to help with the cost of living – it will take pressure off the pump and help you save,” Ms Allan said.
For regional travellers, V/Line train services will also be free, while coach services outside the myki network will require a free booking to secure a seat.
Public Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams said the move would help families manage rising costs. “Fuel prices are rising and Victorian families are feeling it – free public transport will make a real difference for all,” she said.
The Premier acknowledged the measure was not a long-term fix. “This won’t solve every problem, but it’s an immediate step to help Victorians right now while we keep working on new solutions to make Victoria more affordable,” she said.
