Theatre Works is set to present the Australian premiere of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity this July, bringing a powerful and timely work from acclaimed playwright Heather McDonald to Melbourne audiences.
Directed by Nadia Tass, the production arrives in St Kilda after its debut in the United States in 2019 and features an outstanding local cast including Jane Montgomery Griffiths, Kate Cole and Laila Thaker.
Inspired by UNESCO’s 2001 proclamation recognising the importance of protecting cultural heritage, the play follows three women trapped inside a war-ravaged museum. A soldier, a nurse and an art restorer are forced to confront impossible choices as they fight to preserve the final remnants of art and history while struggling to survive.
Theatre Works Executive Director Dianne Toulson says Tass was passionate about bringing the production to Melbourne because of its enduring relevance.
“Nadia brought this play to Theatre Works because she has such a deep personal connection to the work, and a genuine belief in its importance,” Toulson says.
“When she approached us about the project, it was immediately clear why she was so committed to it. The play explores the value of art, culture, memory and heritage and asks important questions about what we choose to preserve and protect as a society,” she said.
Created as UNESCO marks 25 years since its landmark proclamation, the production arrives at a time when questions surrounding war, cultural destruction and collective memory continue to resonate around the world.
Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity runs from 21 July to 1 August at Theatre Works, 14 Acland Street, St Kilda.
