Object of Projections -An exhibition of works by Kim Gordon is opening at the Substation Galleries in Newport on 30 May 2024 and runs until 24 August.
Kim Gordon is the epitome of artistic innovation. As a founding member of Sonic Youth, her impact on alternative music is immeasurable. Gordon’s multifaceted talents extend beyond music; she’s an accomplished visual artist, writer, and fashion icon. Through her distinctive basslines, she challenged conventional notions of melody and rhythm, sculpting Sonic Youth’s signature sound.
Gordon’s artistic vision transcends boundaries. Her visual art explores themes of gender, identity, and consumer culture, often incorporating found objects and mixed media. Her writing reflects a similar boldness, offering candid insights into her experiences and the cultural landscape. Gordon’s influence extends into fashion, where her effortlessly cool style continues to inspire generations.
Gordon has maintained an exploratory art practice since the late 1970s, which are the subject of this new exhibition.
Object Of Projection presents a compelling survey of Gordon’s works, including photographic and mixed media pieces. The exhibition also places focus on her video installations including the recently completed Picture Window and Los Angeles June 6, 2019, where Gordon uses a guitar as a navigation device through public space in a thought-provoking commentary on performance, surveillance and urban life.
In tandem with the exhibition is a special presentation of her triptych video installation Proposal For A Dance. This embodied and psychedelic audio visual work features two female performers wielding electric guitars and wearing Rodarte dresses. Their gestures are an experimental choreography; their movements operate as a gesture towards anti-pop ideals and their implications for the female body.
Additionally, tickets have also gone on sale this week to see Gordon perform live at the Northcote Theatre on Wednesday 25 July when she brings her Collective Tour down under.
