Tackling the untold story of a closeted AFL player, One Day In September is a groundbreaking new musical production that delves into the challenges faced by protagonist Sam Thompson, portrayed by Keanu Gonzalez.
As a rising football star, Sam’s life spirals when his private relationship with a man is uncovered, clashing with his public image and career aspirations. The musical confronts themes of identity, love, and self-sacrifice, questioning if fame and personal happiness can coexist.
Directed by Trudy Dunn and featuring a creative team led by Green Room Award-winner Maverick Newman, One Day in September is brought to life with musical direction from Kohan Van Sambeeck and orchestration by Jason Arrow of Hamilton.
With a talented cast, including Grease star Gonzalez and Australian theatre favorites like Ashleigh Rubenach and Lorinda May Merrypor, this musical promises a thought-provoking and poignant narrative that’s set to resonate well beyond the theatre.
One Day in September opens at the Athenaeum Theatre in Melbourne from November 28–30, 2024.
