After selling out its Brisbane season and earning rave reviews, Little Shop of Horrors is heading to Melbourne for a strictly limited season at the Athenaeum Theatre from May 2027.
The smash-hit production will also visit Hobart’s Theatre Royal from April and Wollongong’s Illawarra Performing Arts Centre from July, with more Australian cities rumoured to join the tour later in 2027.
The new full-scale Australian production follows Seymour Krelborn, a nerdy florist working at the struggling Mushnik’s flower shop on Skid Row. His fortunes appear to change when he discovers a strange new plant, which he names Audrey II after his crush.
There’s just one problem. Audrey II is a foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore with a taste for human flesh and some very sinister plans.
Blending B-movie horror, camp comedy, elaborate puppetry and a score packed with ’60s pop, doo-wop and rock ‘n’ roll, Little Shop of Horrors is a darkly funny story about ambition, greed and the price of getting everything you want.
Woodward Productions Founder and Producer Alex Woodward said the Brisbane season showed just how strongly audiences continue to connect with the cult classic.
“Little Shop of Horrors was one of the first shows I’d seen that had me completely rapt. It had that same effect on audiences when we staged it in Brisbane, so we can’t wait for Melbourne and Hobart to experience the magic mix of elaborate plant puppetry and a deranged dentist that has garnered such a cult following for more than 40 years,” said Woodward.
“Audiences are in for a potent nostalgia hit that is very camp, ridiculously fun and slightly gory.”
Directed by Alister Smith, the production will feature a six-piece band led by Music Supervisor David Young and Musical Director Heidi Loveland, performing songs including ‘Suddenly Seymour’, ‘Feed Me (Git It)’ and ‘Dentist!’.
The full cast will be announced soon, with the waitlist now open ahead of general ticket sales in early November. Fans can sign up for pre-sale access here.
