Prepare for killer rabbits, flying cows and plenty of absurdity, because Monty Python’s Spamalot is making its long-awaited return to Australia, with Melbourne set to host the Tony Award-winning musical this September.
Following a successful season in Perth earlier this year, producer Drew Anthony Creative has confirmed the beloved comedy musical will arrive at the Athenaeum Theatre from 16 September, bringing its hilarious take on the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table to local audiences.
Lovingly inspired by the cult 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the musical combines outrageous comedy with big Broadway-style production numbers, featuring tap-dancing knights, unforgettable songs and the signature irreverent humour that made Monty Python a global phenomenon.
Since premiering on Broadway in 2005, Spamalot has become one of the most celebrated comedy musicals of the modern era. The production received 14 Tony Award nominations and won three, including Best Musical, helping cement its place as a favourite among theatre lovers worldwide.
The score, written by Eric Idle and John Du Prez, includes crowd favourites such as Find Your Grail, The Song That Goes Like This and the ever-popular Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.
Producer Drew Anthony said the show’s Australian return is perfectly timed.
“After celebrating 20 years since the original production last year, it is a great honour to restore Monty Python’s Spamalot’s place on Australian shores for fans who have longed for its return and for new audiences to meet the Knights of the Round Table for the first time,” he said.
“I’m thrilled to bring this hilarious show to audiences at a time when we all need to look on the bright side of life!”
Casting details are still to be announced, but with a strictly limited Melbourne season locked in, fans of comedy, musical theatre and all things Monty Python won’t want to miss this one.
Tickets will go on sale to the general public for Melbourne on Friday 19 June and for Sydney on Monday 29 June via www.ticketmaster.com.au.
