The third year students from the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) showcase their cumulative skills and emotional experiences through their time at the institute in their performance Muse showing until 7 December.
This jaw dropping show is expertly curated by Tegan Carmichael, with artistic consultancy from Alonso Pineda, Emma Pursey and Donna Dunmire.
The real backbone behind Muse is the artists themselves, the students, who reveal their strengths with different apparatuses such as aerial straps, dance trapeze and diablo. They also explore their relationship with these tools and how they’ve failed over their years at NICA, how their emotions play a role in the overall experience.
Muse is about what moves and motivates these students, of course there’s no motivator like fear, and in both their acts and the large moving screen occasionally displaying videos of the students talking about their acts almost all of them touch on that.
They also draw from what inspires them, how they’ve pushed their mediums beyond convention and discovered what makes them unique.
From rocks to vines and flashing lights, each student had the opportunity to put on their own small performance within the larger show.
While one person was the sole focus at one particular time, it was still very clear the awe inspiring level of collaboration and teamwork that these artists possess.
Their feats in their individual fields are complex and moving, each act orchestrated with the utmost precision, and in the broader field of circus performance itself, they excel in captivating the audience and flawlessly assisting one another through their daring and dangerous acts.
The cast includes Anais Stewart, Luca Trimboli, Gabriel Walker, Merlene Hutt, Gemma Jackson, Rose Symons, Jasmin Tait, Taylor Vogt, Jasmine Poniris, Tyson Wallent, Jesse Holden and Zaelea Nolte.
NICA’s graduating class has created an evening of shock, awe and excitement. Feel their joy, their passion, anxieties and enthusiasm as they show off their three years of hard work to give you an incredible experience.
You don’t want to miss seeing these students soar through the sky, plummet to the floor or exercise amazing flexibility and control.
