This March, Theatre Works is set deliver a bold new take on Anton Chekhov’s timeless classic playThree Sisters.
Directed by acclaimed creative Greg Carroll, this ambitious production kicks off the 2025 By Theatre Works season with a 12-strong ensemble of local actors, an immersive set design, and a fresh perspective that promises to breathe new life into the beloved play.
First performed in 1901, Three Sisters follows the lives of four siblings—Olga, Masha, Irina, and Andrei—over three and a half years as they navigate love, loss, and longing after their father’s death. While Irina clings to hope, Masha struggles in a loveless marriage, Olga shoulders the weight of responsibility, and Andrei’s poor choices threaten the family’s future.
This production isn’t just for seasoned theatregoers—it’s also part of the 2025 VCE Theatre Studies Playlist, offering students a chance to experience the transformative power of live performance.
“Having a play on the VCE Theatre Studies Playlist is a fantastic way to connect with the next generation of artists and audiences by bringing schools into the theatre,” says Theatre Works Executive Director Dianne Toulson.
“This production isn’t about recreating a traditional Chekhov; it’s about making it meaningful and accessible for a new generation while reimagining it for those who are returning,” Toulson explains.
“We’re bridging the gap between the classics and modern theatre, offering something dynamic, thought-provoking, and uniquely Theatre Works.”
With an innovative set design that fully utilises the Acland Street venue’s scale, audiences can expect a visually stunning and immersive experience.
Three Sisters runs from 7-22 March. More information is here.
