More than 90 new murals will appear across Frankston later this month as the Frankston Street Art Festival returns, once again turning the city’s laneways into one of Australia’s largest outdoor street art galleries.
The ninth edition of the festival will run from 16 March to 22 March, bringing leading Australian and international artists together to create a wave of colour and creativity across the city. Among the works planned are nine large scale murals by feature artists including Buff Diss, Creature Creature, Father Marker, Juzpop and Melbourne artist Jack Rowland.
One of the most intriguing additions this year will be a temporary Street Art Studio set up inside a vacant retail space at Bayside Shopping Centre. From 19 March to 22 March, visitors will be able to watch artists at work as murals, graffiti writing, paste ups and cut outs take shape in real time.
The pop up space will offer a rare behind the scenes look at the process that goes into large scale street art. A launch party on the final Saturday of the festival will bring together artists, music and drinks to celebrate the creative takeover. The studio will then remain open on Saturdays for another eight weeks, with artworks eventually sold through a silent auction.
Frankston City Council Mayor Sue Baker said the event continues to strengthen the city’s growing reputation as a destination for urban art.
“With more than 90 pieces of street art and 80 sculptures dotted throughout the municipality, Frankston’s urban arts culture reputation is well-established,” Mayor Baker said.
“Our capacity to draw international artists to be a part of the Festival will only serve to strengthen that standing and draw more eyes to our City. I’m so excited to see the City celebrate its passion for the arts, and the different pieces that will be on display.”
The festival will also include guided Street Art Tours and workshops at the Frankston Library Forecourt where young creatives can learn directly from professional artists.
