Frankston City is preparing to celebrate a major milestone this month, with a packed program of events marking 60 years since it was officially declared a city on 24 August 1966.
Running from 21 to 23 August, the celebrations will showcase the city’s history, creativity and community spirit through exhibitions, live performances, markets, family activities, talks and public art. Residents and visitors will also have the chance to explore historic photographs and memorabilia, enjoy local storytelling and experience free cultural events across the municipality.
Mayor Cr Sue Baker said the anniversary was a chance to celebrate everyone who has helped shape Frankston over the past six decades.
“Every person who has lived, worked, volunteered, studied, raised a family or run a business in Frankston City has helped shape the community we celebrate today,” Cr Baker said.
“Since officially becoming a city in 1966, Frankston City has grown into a vibrant, creative and connected destination that continues to evolve while staying true to its strong sense of community.”
The celebrations will also coincide with 60th anniversaries for several local sporting organisations, including the Karingal Bulls Football Netball Club, Frankston District Netball Association and Frankston Dolphins Football Club.
“What makes this milestone even more special is that we’re celebrating alongside several of our community’s long-standing sporting organisations,” Cr Baker said.
Program highlights include special exhibitions at Frankston Arts Centre, historical displays and author talks at Frankston Library, free entry to McClelland Sculpture Park + Gallery, a community mural project, a swing night celebration and free screenings of the classic film On the Beach, which was filmed across Frankston, Mt Eliza and Melbourne.
A community time capsule will also invite locals to share memories and reflections, creating a snapshot of Frankston City in 2026 for future generations.
