A landmark production of Death of a Salesman is set to make a powerful return to Melbourne, with a strictly limited season landing at Her Majesty’s Theatre from 11-22 August before heading north for a Brisbane debut at QPAC Lyric Theatre on 28 August.
Following celebrated runs across Melbourne, Sydney and Perth in 2023 and 2024, the revival brings back a formidable creative team and cast, led by Emmy, Golden Globe and Tony Award winner Anthony LaPaglia. His return as Willy Loman was a standout of the original season, widely praised for its emotional depth and commanding presence.
LaPaglia shared his enthusiasm for stepping back into one of theatre’s most demanding roles. “Arthur Miller was the presiding genius of American theatre in the 20th Century and “Death of a Salesman” arguably his finest achievement,” LaPaglia said
“was lucky enough to meet and work with Arthur when I played Eddie Carbone in “A View From the Bridge” on Broadway in 1997 and feel a deep affinity for his work. The story of Willy Loman is simply one of the greatest roles ever written and remains timeless in its creation of the tragic unravelling of a man’s identity after years of neglecting his relationships and true self-fulfilment.
“You see the effect this has on his devoted wife and the shattered relationships with his sons. It also speaks profoundly to the American Dream and, in many ways, foreshadows the dissolution of that dream in the 21st Century. Even after 77-years this play, like all great classics, is as powerful and relevant as ever,” he said.
Directed by Neil Armfield, the production leans into the enduring relevance of Arthur Miller’s Pulitzer Prize-winning work, capturing the fragility of ambition and the cost of chasing an elusive dream.
Joining LaPaglia is a standout Australian ensemble including Alison Whyte, Josh Helman and Ben O’Toole, reprising their acclaimed performances.
Producers noted the show’s previous success, which saw more than 90,000 audience members nationwide, highlighting its emotional impact and critical acclaim.
