Melbourne audiences are set to experience one of the world’s most celebrated musicals when the acclaimed new production of Fiddler on the Roof arrives in Australia, led by Australian screen and stage icon Sigrid Thornton in her first starring musical role in more than a decade.
Fresh from record-breaking, sold-out seasons in London and across the UK, the multi award-winning revival will tour nationally before heading to Melbourne as part of its Australian premiere run. The production has already earned a reputation as one of the most talked-about musical theatre events on the West End, collecting three Olivier Awards including Best Musical Revival.
Thornton will take on the role of Yente, joining a cast led by Australian and West End performer Troy Sussman as Tevye. Across a career spanning more than 40 years, Sussman has appeared in productions including Les Misérables, Sunset Boulevard, Disney’s Aladdin and Back to the Future.
Joining them is Alexis Fishman as Golde, alongside rising stars Freya Boltman as Tzeitel, Ellen Ebbs as Hodel and Caity Plummer as Chava. Internationally acclaimed violinist Ben Adler will appear as The Fiddler.
Director Jordan Fein said, “The talent we saw in the Australian auditions was world-class. I am overjoyed to have assembled this brilliant company to continue the legacy of this beloved story”.
Set in 1905 in the village of Anatevka, Fiddler on the Roof follows milkman Tevye and his family as tradition, faith and changing social expectations collide. Featuring timeless songs including If I Were A Rich Man, Matchmaker and Sunrise, Sunset, the musical remains one of theatre’s most enduring works.
This new production has been praised for its emotional depth and contemporary staging, with Fein reuniting with designer Tom Scutt and choreographer Julia Cheng following their acclaimed work on Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club in London and on Broadway.
