Victoria’s alpine resorts are preparing to welcome back snow lovers for the official start of the 2026 snow season, with opening weekend celebrations set to take over the mountains across the King’s Birthday long weekend from Saturday 6 June.
From fireworks and live music to snow play and marshmallow roasting, the state’s ski fields are gearing up for a lively start to winter as visitors return to the slopes, villages and cosy alpine venues for the first major weekend of the season.
Each resort is leaning into its own style of celebration. At Mt Buller, the self-proclaimed “Home of Aussie Après” will host DJ sets, firepits, fireworks and family entertainment, alongside appearances from sled dogs and the Animals of the Magical Mountain show.
Falls Creek is opening the season with a mix of art installations, mural walks, live music and village entertainment, including fireworks and fire twirlers bringing extra energy to the mountain after dark.
Over at Mt Hotham, the social calendar includes the Hotham SnowBall, trivia nights and a French Cheese Extravaganza Lunch, while the Hotham Hub Snow Play and Activity Centre will be open for tobogganing and family activities throughout the weekend.
Mt Baw Baw is planning a packed program of games and activities including snowball competitions, tug of war and a beach-themed party, while Lake Mountain’s celebrations will include a Welcome to Country ceremony led by local Taungurung representatives and meet-and-greets with mascot Lenny the Leadbeater Possum.
For those chasing a quieter alpine escape, Mt Stirling will offer early season mountain exploring, waffles at the café and the chance to dust off ski gear ahead of winter proper.
“With colder temperatures and some snow falls forecast over the coming week, we’re anticipating a great start to the 2026 snow season,” Alpine Resorts Victoria CEO Amber Gardner said.
“Opening weekend is always a special time to visit the resorts as communities, visitors and businesses come together to welcome in the season.”
