A mystery gig is coming to Melbourne’s music scene this winter, with Australian supergroup Bleak Squad announcing a secret inner north show as part of their upcoming national tour.
The catch is nobody knows exactly where it’s happening yet.
The band has confirmed the Melbourne performance will take place on Friday 7 August, but the venue will remain under wraps until the day of the show, with ticket holders receiving the location details shortly before doors open.
Made up of Adalita from Magic Dirt, Mick Harvey of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and The Birthday Party, Dirty Three guitarist Mick Turner and Marty Brown from Art of Fighting, Bleak Squad have quickly become one of the country’s most talked-about new acts despite only forming last year.
Since releasing their acclaimed debut album Strange Love, the group has sold out headline shows, landed on the Australian Music Prize shortlist, played Golden Plains and supported Pulp. They’ve also recently released a new single, Black & White, while quietly beginning work on a second album ahead of overseas dates later this year.
For the Melbourne show, the band says they were inspired by the kind of secret pop-up gigs usually associated with younger artists and warehouse parties.
“OK, we’ve added a Melbs show to our run in August. But it’s a little bit different.”
“You know how it’s always the twenty-somethings that do secret, pop-up shows in super cool spaces? And we’ve all gone to the same venues a thousand times to the point that they feel like an extension of our lounge rooms?”
The venue is expected to be somewhere in Melbourne’s inner north, with doors opening at 7.30pm and the night wrapping up by 10.30pm. Capacity is extremely limited, with tickets only available through the band’s mailing list.
