Forest Hill Chase has taken an unexpected turn into sport, opening a three-court basketball facility called The Summit, built in partnership with Nunawading Basketball and sitting right inside the shopping centre.
Located on level three, the space is being pitched as more than just a sports venue, but a sign of how retail centres are starting to shift into community hubs where people come for more than just shopping.
The idea is simple but unusual for Australia. Instead of empty retail space or pop-ups, there are now full basketball courts bringing players, families and spectators through the centre on a daily basis.
“This is about creating purposeful designs that drive consistent visitation, deepen community connection and deliver long-term value for our partners, tenants and stakeholders,” said Ben Finger, MD at Haben, co-owner and manager of Forest Hill Chase.
For Basketball Victoria, the project is also a response to growing demand for indoor courts across Melbourne’s suburbs, where space is increasingly hard to find.
“‘The Summit’ is an exciting example of how cross-sector collaboration can help unlock new infrastructure opportunities in metropolitan areas where space is limited, while also creating stronger, more connected communities,” said Nick Honey, CEO at Basketball Victoria.
He added that the project shows how sport can play a wider role in community wellbeing, beyond traditional venues and stadiums.
Nunawading Basketball CEO Mark Hallett said the courts will provide a much needed boost for players of all levels, while also strengthening connections across the local area.
“This is about providing accessible, structured opportunities for the wider basketball community to participate, connect and thrive,” said Ingrid Vanin, Forest Hill Chase centre manager.
