A milestone vintage deserves a memorable celebration, and this winter one of Western Australia’s most respected family wineries is heading to Melbourne for a special one-night-only dining experience.
On Wednesday 29 July, South Yarra’s Mr L’s Bar and Restaurant will host an intimate Alkoomi Wine Dinner, bringing together exceptional wines, a five-course seasonal menu and the stories behind a winery that has helped shape Australia’s wine landscape for generations.
Marking its 50th vintage, Alkoomi Wines remains one of the defining producers of the Frankland River region. Family-owned and operated, the winery has built a reputation for crafting wines that express the character of their surroundings while maintaining a strong connection to family, community and place.
The evening will be hosted by Herald Sun Food and Wine Editor Kara Monsen, with Alkoomi owners Sandy and Laura sharing insights into the winery’s history and the wines themselves. Guests will have the opportunity to taste wines made from vines originally planted by Sandy’s father, paired thoughtfully with each course throughout the evening.
The winery’s Indigenous name, Alkoomi, translates to “a place we chose”, reflecting the family’s enduring commitment to the land and the legacy they have built over five decades.
The setting is equally fitting. Hosted at Mr L’s on Toorak Road, the dinner brings together two family-run businesses known for their warm hospitality and commitment to quality. Owners Lucky and Sheena have earned a loyal following through their stylish approach to Modern Australian dining, blending local produce with global influences.
For the occasion, award-winning chef Deepak Mishra has designed a bespoke five-course menu showcasing his signature West meets East approach, with each dish created to complement the wines and highlight seasonal ingredients.
With just 50 seats available, this promises to be one of Melbourne’s most intimate and memorable food and wine events of the winter season.
The Alkoomi Wine Dinner takes place on Wednesday 29 July at Mr L’s Bar and Restaurant, South Yarra. Tickets are $150 per person and include a five-course menu with matched wines. Bookings can be made here.
