Footscray is set for a major transformation, with the first concept designs unveiled for Creative West, a landmark cultural precinct planned as part of Maribyrnong City Council’s Dream Big vision to revitalise the Footscray CBD.
Planned for the site of the ageing Footscray Library and adjoining car park, Creative West will bring together a contemporary library, performing arts venue and town park to create a new civic hub focused on creativity, learning and community connection.
The proposed precinct has been shaped through extensive community consultation, including more than 1,100 responses, 19 focus groups and a Community Voice Co-design Group. The process also included engagement with Wurundjeri Elders to help ensure the project reflects the history and future of the area.
A key feature of Creative West will be an adaptable 500-plus seat theatre designed to host a range of performances and events, alongside a dedicated rehearsal studio for artists, performers and community groups. The precinct will also include a modern library with technology and maker spaces, while a shared foyer will act as a central meeting place for the community.
Outside, a new shady town park will provide a flexible space for events, recreation and everyday use, connecting indoor and outdoor areas to create a welcoming destination throughout the day and evening.
Maribyrnong City Council Mayor Cr Mohamed Semra said the project would help address the need for more cultural infrastructure in Melbourne’s west while supporting Footscray’s growing economy.
““We are dreaming big for Footscray’s future. Creative West responds directly to what we’ve heard from the community – the need for a welcoming, shared space for connection, creativity and learning. It will be a home base for Footscray and will help strengthen both the daytime and night-time economy and addresses the gap in cultural infrastructure in Melbourne’s west,” he said.
Creative West is expected to cost around $148 million, with the project receiving $5 million from the Australian Government’s Urban Precincts and Partnerships Program, matched by Council. Further investment from state and federal governments is being sought to deliver the precinct.
