Footscray is getting a new monthly food market, with Slow Food Melbourne and Maribyrnong City Council teaming up to bring local producers, food trucks and fresh produce to the heart of the CBD.
Slow Foodscray will launch in September at Maddern Square, taking place on the first Sunday of each month and bringing the community together around food, culture and local makers.
The new market builds on the popularity of Slow Food Melbourne’s existing markets in West Footscray and Edgewater, which have become regular destinations for fresh produce, makers and food lovers.
Now, that same focus on local and sustainable food is heading into Footscray’s city centre, with the market also helping activate one of the suburb’s key public spaces.
Maribyrnong City Council Mayor Cr Mohamed Semra said bringing people into Footscray’s public spaces was an important part of the broader Footscray Revitalisation program.
“Great places come alive when people are out enjoying them. Activating key locations brings our community together, supports local businesses and creates vibrant public spaces where people feel welcome and safe.
“Slow Foodscray is exactly the kind of exciting activation we want to see as we continue revitalising Footscray – bringing people together around great food, culture and everything that makes this such a special part of Melbourne’s west.”
The first market will take place on Sunday, September 6. More information is here.
