One of Australia’s most beloved children’s picture books is getting a musical makeover, with The Very Cranky Bear set to make its Melbourne debut at Arts Centre Melbourne’s Playhouse in January 2027.
Created by bestselling Australian author and illustrator Nick Bland, the much-loved story will be brought to life with catchy songs, big laughs and plenty of heart during a strictly limited season from 13 to 16 January.
Set in the Jingle Jangle Jungle, the story follows Zebra, Moose, Lion and Sheep as they search for somewhere cosy to escape a storm. Unfortunately, the cave they find already has one very cranky resident who would rather be left alone to sleep.
The musical features painted stripes, borrowed antlers, an enormous golden mane and one small sheep with a very big idea, as the friends learn about friendship, empathy and the importance of listening.
Adapted by Tim McGarry, with original music by Gabbi Bolt and directed by Nicole Pingon, the production comes from CDP Theatre Producers, the team behind stage adaptations of Magic Beach, YOU & ME and The Land of Lost Things and DOG MAN: THE MUSICAL.
Arts Centre Melbourne Families & Children Creative Producer Rebecca Armstrong said the production was a chance to see a classic Australian story brought to life in a whole new way.
“Since The Very Cranky Bear was first published in 2008 it has quickly become a classic of Australian children’s literature,” she said.
“With the exceptional CDP and the talented Tim McGarry and Gabbi Bolt behind this adaption, Arts Centre Melbourne couldn’t be more excited to bring this magical new musical to Melbourne this summer!”
McGarry described creating the show as “a total joy”, while Bolt said the team had worked hard to honour Bland’s “humorous, whimsical and colourful world”.
Following its world premiere at the Sydney Opera House in December, The Very Cranky Bear arrives at the Playhouse from 13 to 16 January 2027.
