At Manningham Art Gallery this spring, photographer Katrin Koenning is inviting Melburnians to look a little closer.
Her new exhibition, Mirrors, brings everyday moments into focus through a deeply personal lens, weaving themes of connection, belonging, love and loss. Drawn from more than 20 years of her photographic archive, the collection spans people, places and the natural world – intimate glimpses that together form a meditation on how we live and relate to one another.
“The picture is such a tiny part – the value lies in the act of relating and how these relations live in the world,” says Koenning.
Koenning was born in Dortmund, Germany, and has called Melbourne home for many years. Her practice is defined by a deep attentiveness to the relationships between people, communities and the environment, a perspective that has seen her work exhibited widely.
In Australia, her photographs have been shown at the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. Internationally, she has exhibited in Dubai, Bangladesh and Paris, and her images have featured in publications such as The New Yorker, The Guardian, Zeit Magazine and Vogue.com.
Mirrors continues this trajectory, inviting visitors to slow down, reflect and notice the quiet beauty threaded through daily life.
The exhibition is showing until Saturday 18 October at Manningham Art Gallery, MC Square, 687 Doncaster Road, Doncaster. The gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday, 11am–4pm. Entry is free.
