Three of Australian Idol’s most recognisable voices are set to reunite on stage this December, with Rob Mills, Casey Donovan and Paulini leading The Idols of Musical Theatre at the Melbourne Recital Centre on December 27 and 28.
The trio gave fans a first look this week as they stepped into the rehearsal room with longtime collaborator John Foreman, their former Australian Idol musical director, filling the space with tight harmonies and high-voltage energy.
The early preview centred on an upbeat run of “Can’t Stop the Feeling” from & Juliet, revealing the chemistry still shared by the three performers who launched their careers on national television before becoming musical theatre heavyweights.
Their reunion marks a rare moment where all three Idol alumni share the stage with Foreman again, this time backed by a 40 piece orchestra as part of the Australian Pops Orchestra’s Holiday Concerts.
The show will draw on the productions that have shaped their careers, with hits from Chicago, Wicked, The Bodyguard, Grease, Rent, & Juliet and 9 to 5 The Musical among the highlights. It will also see the performers tap into dream roles and fan favourites under Foreman’s direction.
Rob Mills said, “I’m honestly pumped for these shows! The ultimate Idol reunion but with better lighting and no eliminations! Sharing the stage with Casey, Paulini, John and the Australian Pops Orchestra is just epic. John’s a legend, he’s been there since the very beginning for all of us, and he always finds a way to make the music and the performers shine.”
Casey Donovan added, “It’s incredible to be reunited with Rob, Paulini and John, and performing all the musical theatre hits we’ve each been part of over the years is such a thrill.”
Paulini said, “It’s so special to be back with Casey, Rob and John, I absolutely can’t wait for December 27! And performing with a 40-piece orchestra? It’s honestly breathtaking.”
