Melburnians are being invited to celebrate the 100th birthday of legendary broadcaster and natural historian David Attenborough with a free screening of his latest documentary, Ocean, on the Big Screen at Fed Square.
Born on 8 May 1926 in West London, Attenborough has spent more than eight decades shaping the way audiences understand and connect with the natural world. After studying natural sciences at Cambridge, he joined the BBC in 1952 as a trainee producer and went on to pioneer the modern nature documentary through landmark series watched by millions around the globe.
In recent years, Attenborough has become one of the world’s most recognisable environmental advocates, using his voice to highlight the impacts of climate change, habitat destruction and human activity on fragile ecosystems.
His 2025 documentary Ocean continues that work, taking viewers deep beneath the surface to explore the planet’s vast underwater habitats and the critical role oceans play in sustaining life on Earth. The film also examines the damage caused by deep-sea trawling and overfishing, while offering a hopeful perspective on the possibility of recovery and change.
With nearly a century of experience observing the natural world, Ocean serves as both a warning and a reminder of what is still worth protecting.
