Passengers in Melbourne’s west are getting a glimpse of the future, with early designs unveiled for two brand new train stations at Tottenham railway station and Albion railway station as part of the massive Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1 project.
The upgraded stations form part of a $4.1 billion joint investment from the Commonwealth and State governments aimed at transforming one of Victoria’s busiest rail corridors while preparing the network for a direct train link to Melbourne Airport.

Under the plans, Tottenham Station will be rebuilt around 20 metres north of its current location on the realigned Sunbury Line. The new station will feature modern platforms, improved lighting, weather shelters, lifts and stairs, along with a wider underpass connecting both sides of the rail line to make moving through the precinct safer and easier for passengers.

Further north, Albion Station will also receive a complete rebuild slightly east of its existing location. The new design includes an accessible concourse with lifts and stairs, upgraded seating, CCTV, shelters and improved lighting.
The station upgrades are just one piece of a much larger transformation happening across Melbourne’s west. More than six kilometres of track between West Footscray and Albion are being upgraded to untangle the busy rail junction near Sunshine and boost capacity across the corridor.

Once complete, the upgraded network will allow up to 1,000 trains a day to move through the area while also supporting future Melton Line electrification for rapidly growing western suburbs.
Construction is already underway, with crews currently relocating underground services between Albion and Sunshine ahead of major rail works. Both stations are expected to be completed by 2030.
