The Abbotsford Convent is set to showcase an engaging exhibition titled Disgraceland featuring the imaginative work of The Huxleys, a collaborative pair of performance and visual artists hailing from Melbourne. Taking place from August 10th to 19th, this event will also offer a workshop and a captivating performance night with the dynamic duo, Will and Garrett Huxley (Aus/Yorta Yorta/Gumbaynggirr).
In the enigmatic world of DisGraceland, The Huxleys embark on a daring road trip through the rural landscapes of Victoria, crafting a vivid fever dream narrative centered around two queer extraterrestrial Elvis figures struggling to find their way back home. The duo brilliantly captures the essence of how Elvis would have made his initial mark in the conservative atmosphere of 1950s small-town America, embracing the campy and unorthodox aura he would have exuded.
As visionary artists, The Huxleys ingeniously reinterpret the history of rock ‘n’ roll, infusing it with a compelling gay love story, reimagined through their distinct queer cosmic lens. Through their meticulously crafted photographs and costumes, The Huxleys explore their enduring fascination with escapism and otherworldly allure.
Beyond the exhibition itself, attendees have the opportunity to participate in an inventive workshop led by The Huxleys, crafting and bedazzling tea towels. The workshop is scheduled at the Convent on August 15th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Additionally, an Artist Talk is slated for August 19th, running from 1:30 to 2:30 pm.
A special highlight of the event is the DisGraceland Performance Night, taking place on August 12th. During this evening, The Huxleys will share the stage with an impressive lineup of exceptional queer performers from Naarm. Together, they’ll deliver unique renditions of classic Elvis tracks, featuring titles like “Are You Loathsome Tonight?,” “Got Great Boobs of Fire,” and “Come Shake Your Suspicious Behinds,” among others. The goal is to uplift the audience, get them dancing, and provide a fresh twist on familiar tunes.
