Acclaimed pianist David Helfgott returns to the Melbourne Recital Centre in July to bid a fond farewell to his long-performing career which has been closely associated with the iconic Melbourne venue.
Playing some of his favourite solo piano works of Chopin and Liszt and performing Rachmanioff’s third piano concerto in its version for two pianos with British pianist, Rhodri Clarke, David will share with his legion of loyal fans, some of the music so iconically connected with his amazing life of personal challenge and enormous success that has been defined by his determination to find joy in every moment.
Born in 1947 in Melbourne, Helfgott displayed prodigious musical abilities from a young age. His early success led to international recognition, but his career was overshadowed by mental health struggles.
The 1996 film Shine starring Geoffrey Rush portrayed his life, depicting his difficult childhood, mental breakdown, and eventual resurgence as a performer.
Helfgott’s interpretations are characterized by their emotive depth and unconventional style, often marked by spontaneity and exuberance.
Despite facing numerous challenges, he continues to inspire audiences with his passionate performances, demonstrating resilience and the transformative power of music. Helfgott’s story serves as a testament to the human spirit’s capacity to endure and triumph over adversity, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of classical music and beyond.
