In honour of the 2024 People’s Blockade campaign, Rising Tide and the Environmental Film Festival Australia (EFFA) will be co-presenting a double-feature screening of The First Wave (2024) and Water is Life (2018).
The screening will be at CERES Learning Centre in Brunswick East on Wednesday 11 September. The film event will be centred on climate activism and the power of community. Join together with like-minded people and be inspired by activists from across Australia to see how you can support climate action.
The First Wave is a short film that covers the epic People’s Blockade 2023, where a rising tide of everyday people shut down the world’s largest coal port for 32 hours. The film features footage from the beach, water and sky and interviews with the organisers and blockaders detailing how the historic event came together.
First Nations people around the world have cared for their country for millennia. These communities are often fighting to keep water, country and the climate safe from the actions of fossil fuel corporations. Water is Life follows Aboriginal activists from the Northern Territory as they travel to the United States to learn more about the impacts of fracking and how communities have the power to stop it.
Entry to the film event is by donation, and refreshments will be served. Donations are used to spread the word about and to encourage people to attend the People’s Blockade 2024 in Newcastle (scheduled to take place from 19-28 November 2024) via events such as this screening.
