Melbourne’s ambitious Italian mega-market Il Mercato Centrale has finally opened at 546 Collins Street following two years of setbacks.
Nestled within the historic McPherson Building, Il Mercato Centrale Melbourne beautifully captures the charm of a traditional Italian market – set across three levels with the capacity to feed more than 800 people at a time.
The dynamic marketplace introduces the essence of Italy to the city, celebrating not just food but the artistry and craftsmanship behind it. Originally established in Florence in 2014, the Melbourne location is the first of its kind outside Italy, following successful ventures in Rome, Milan, and Turin.
The Melbourne Il Mercato Centrale will have a strong focus on local producers and businesses, with 23 homegrown artisans with Italian flair.
Visitors are greeted by a bustling atmosphere filled with the enticing aromas of freshly baked bread, handmade pasta, and seasonal seafood, all crafted with a focus on quality and sustainability.
The marketplace is fully licensed, enabling visitors to sip on a glass of wine or a cocktail as they explore. With beverages carefully curated from both local and international producers, guests can enjoy a refreshing drink while browsing through the diverse food offerings.
A standout feature of Il Mercato Centrale is its innovative cashless system, which streamlines the ordering process. Guests can scan a QR code at their table or at any stall to order food and beverages from multiple artisans simultaneously. Once the order is ready, a text message alerts you to collect it—allowing for a hassle-free experience.
Il Mercato Centrale is not just about food; it’s envisioned as a community hub. The space is designed for social interaction, featuring communal seating areas and open spaces that encourage visitors to connect. The marketplace will host cultural events, live performances, and monthly cooking masterclasses, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the traditions of Italian cuisine
It will be open daily and entry is free, with late-night trading until 3am on Friday and Saturdays.
