New Zealand born artist Jason Parker is presenting his latest multi-artform exhibition, RISE, RUIN, RENEW, REPEAT, at The Stables in North Melbourne’s Meat Market. This engaging exhibition examines the duality of human nature, highlighting our ability to destroy and our desire to rise above it.
Visitors can enjoy Parker’s vibrant abstract paintings, which feature bold compositions and lively brushwork. The exhibition also includes oil paintings, concrete works, kinetic sculptures, short films, and a unique soundscape, creating a complete sensory experience.
The Stables, with its concrete floors and gable ceiling, provides a perfect backdrop for this immersive exhibition, which spans three areas. The urban environment, filled with concrete and rubble, reflects the resilience and impermanence of city life. By using concrete instead of traditional canvases, Parker symbolizes the fragile nature of society and the built environments we navigate.
RISE, RUIN, RENEW, REPEAT invites viewers to reflect on the complex relationship between destruction and renewal. Parker’s work encourages visitors to consider their own roles in this cycle and offers an engaging look at what it means to be human.
“While part of the work is intricate and delicate, the other is more fragmented and destructive. My intention is for guests to sense the fragility of life and see how beauty can be swiftly undone in moments of turmoil,” Parker explains.
After spending years cultivating a refined painting practice, he elaborates “…it has been thrilling to go against this nature by taking to the concrete works with a hammer to introduce an element of chaos and destruction”.
In contrast, the second part of the exhibition features large oil paintings that explore the beauty of dance and movement. These artworks capture moments of pure expression, allowing us to rise above our limitations and connect with something greater. They inspire us to overcome our darker tendencies and become sources of light.
“I aim to transport the viewer and evoke an emotional response to the best and worst that lies within us,” Parker said.
Visitors can explore a gallery of artworks and shop for some of the artist’s signature pieces, including prints, pins, totes, and tapestries.
The exhibition is open for a limited time, and the final night will feature a special performance with music by Daniel O’Toole, trumpeter Fabian Acuna, and contemporary dancers who are part of the artwork.
