Swedish rock legends Opeth have a announced a headline tour in Australia and New Zealand set for November 2025.
After six long years wait, the promises to be groundbreaking – with seven absolutely massive concerts featuring two-hours+ sets including landmark masterpieces and songs from Opeth’s darkest and heaviest album in decades – the critically acclaimed concept album, The last WILL and TESTAMENT.
Melbourne fans will be able to catch them at the Palais Theatre on Friday 21 November 2025.
Opeth is a Swedish progressive metal band formed in 1990, known for blending diverse musical styles, including death metal, progressive rock, jazz, and folk. Founded by frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt, Opeth started with a death metal focus before evolving into a more experimental and complex sound that draws on both heavy and melodic elements.
In the 2010s, the band took a turn toward 1970s-inspired progressive rock, highlighted in albums such as Heritage (2011) and Pale Communion (2014), which showcased Opeth’s range and Åkerfeldt’s commitment to musical evolution.
Known for their unpredictable compositions, intricate guitar work, and dynamic shifts between growling vocals and melodic singing, Opeth has built a devoted global following. This versatility and boundary-pushing style have established them as a unique presence in both metal and progressive rock
The last WILL and TESTAMENT is a concept album set in the post-World War I era, unfolding the story of a wealthy, conservative patriarch whose last will and testament reveals shocking family secrets.
The narrative weaves through the patriarch’s confessions, the reactions of his twin children, and the mysterious presence of a polio-ridden girl who the family have taken care of. The album begins with the reading of the father’s will in his mansion. Among those in attendance is a young girl, who, despite being an orphan and polio-ridden, has been raised by the family. Her presence at the will reading raises suspicions and questions among the twins.
Opeth vocalist/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt saids: “I love this record. I have to say it. Maybe I’m proud even?”.
“Most of our music has sprung from the same source, so I guess it’s not much of a shocker if it’s going to sound like ‘us’. I’m a bit in awe of what we did with “The Last Will and Testament”. It feels like a dream,” he said.
