Death Cab for Cutie are heading back to Australia this November, confirming their first local shows in seven years alongside the release of their new album I Built You a Tower, out Friday 5 June.
The tour includes a Melbourne stop at Margaret Court Arena on Friday 13 November, following Sydney and ahead of a final show in Brisbane.
The shows arrive as the band prepares to release their first album in four years. Recorded over three weeks in Los Angeles with producer John Congleton, I Built You a Tower marks a return to a more personal and reflective songwriting style. Work on the record began while the band were touring anniversary shows for Transatlanticism and Plans, with frontman Ben Gibbard drawing on a period of personal upheaval.
The result is a collection shaped by themes of grief, love and loss, with early single Riptides offering a first look at the album’s tone. The upcoming tour will see the band mix new material with songs spanning their catalogue.
Formed in the late 1990s, Death Cab for Cutie have built a long-standing global following, moving from college radio beginnings to major international tours. Their current lineup continues to evolve, but the core songwriting identity remains centred on Gibbard’s distinct voice and lyrical approach.
“I just love the feeling of being in a room, having just made something that I’m proud of. I can’t imagine wanting to do anything else,” Gibbard says.
“This is literally what I’ve wanted to do since I was 12 years old. And the fact that I’ve been given the opportunity to do it, I feel that I have an obligation to my 12-year-old self to continue to do this and find the joy in it, and to experience the odd wonder of what it’s like to create things.”
