The first-hand story of one of the most significant human spaceflight missions ever undertaken is heading to a Melbourne stage, with former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly set to appear live this November.
Kelly will present The Sky Is Not The Limit: Lessons From A Year In Space at Palais Theatre on 20 November as part of a five-city Australian tour, offering a first-hand account of his record-setting 340-day mission aboard the International Space Station.
The event arrives as global space exploration shifts into a new phase, with programs like Artemis program laying the groundwork for long-term lunar missions and future crewed journeys to Mars. Kelly’s mission remains a key reference point in that transition, providing one of the most comprehensive datasets on how the human body responds to extended time in space.
Across the live show, Kelly will recount what it takes to live and work in orbit for nearly a full year, a mission that covered more than 140 million miles and pushed the limits of human endurance. His time in space formed part of a joint study with Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko, examining the physical and psychological impacts of long-duration spaceflight.
The research extended beyond the station itself. Kelly’s identical twin brother Mark Kelly remained on Earth as a control subject, contributing to one of the most detailed comparative studies ever conducted on genetic and physiological changes linked to space travel.
Throughout his career, Kelly logged more than 520 days in space across four missions, including multiple command roles aboard the ISS. His year-long expedition marked a turning point in understanding how astronauts adapt to isolation, microgravity and prolonged exposure to radiation, all critical factors in planning future missions beyond low Earth orbit.
