One of the internet’s strangest food creations is officially heading to Australia, with IKEA confirming its viral meatball flavoured lollipop will arrive in stores nationwide on 20 June for a limited time.
Created in collaboration with confectionery giant Chupa Chups, the unusual sweet first launched as what many assumed was an April Fools’ joke before quickly turning into a global sensation. The lollipop made its public debut at Milan Design Week last month, where more than 75,000 samples were handed out to curious visitors.
Now, Australian customers will finally get the chance to try the bizarre Swedish-inspired creation for free at participating IKEA stores.
The meatball flavoured lollipop combines the taste of IKEA’s iconic Swedish meatballs with the familiar hard candy format of a Chupa Chups pop, reimagining one of the retailer’s most famous food items in an entirely unexpected way.
“What started as a playful idea quickly became something we knew customers would love experiencing in real life,” said Javier Quiñones, Commercial Manager at Ingka Group.
“With one million meatball flavoured lollipops across 24 markets, we’re inviting people to celebrate Swedishness in an unexpected way, discovering a joyful taste of Sweden that sparks curiosity and brings a smile.”
Australian IKEA stores are also expected to feature interactive activations and themed photo opportunities as part of the launch celebrations.
