After two months of free public transport across Victoria, commuters will now move to half-price fares from today through until the end of the year, while drivers can also begin claiming a new 20 per cent registration rebate.
The changes arrive as households continue dealing with rising fuel prices and broader cost of living pressures, with drivers able to claim money back on eligible vehicle registrations while commuters will pay less every time they tap on across the public transport network.
Under the rego rebate scheme, eligible motorists can receive up to $186 back for one vehicle, while households with two registered vehicles could save up to $372. The rebate applies to light vehicles for personal use including cars, utes and motorbikes under 4.5 tonnes.
To access the rebate, drivers will need to apply through the Service Victoria app or website after paying their registration between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026. Payments will be transferred directly into bank accounts, with most expected to arrive within 30 days.
Applications open from 9am on 1 June and close on 31 July 2026. Victorians can claim rebates for up to two vehicles registered in their name.
At the same time, public transport fares across Victoria will be reduced by 50 per cent until the end of the year. A full daily fare will now cost $5.70 instead of $11.40, regardless of how far passengers travel across the network.
The discounted fares are expected to save regular commuters more than $850 by 1 January next year, while free public transport for children under 18 and eligible concession pass holders will remain in place permanently.
