Opera Australia will unveil a spectacular new production of Puccini’s La Bohème at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre this November, marking the company’s first new mainstage production of the beloved opera in 15 years.
Running from 7 to 18 November, the World Premiere will transport audiences to a wintery 20th century Paris, inspired by the painters, poets and musicians of the era.
One of Australia’s most exciting young opera directors, Constantine Costi, leads a creative team including Set Designer Dann Barber, Costume Designer Sabina Myers and Lighting Designer Morgan Moroney.
The production promises plenty of theatrical spectacle, with a flying balloon basket, life-sized floats and hand-painted scenery bringing the Parisian setting to life. Costumes will also be crafted by hand at Opera Australia’s headquarters.
The cast brings together Australian and international talent, including Melbourne-born Alexandra Flood, who returns home to perform the role of Musetta.
Award-winning soprano Galina Cheplakova will make her Australian debut, sharing the role of Mimì with Italian soprano Valeria Sepe, who returns to Opera Australia.
Australian Chinese tenor Kang Wang will share the role of Rodolfo with award-winning Italian tenor Paride Cataldo, who makes his Opera Australia debut.
The production will be conducted by acclaimed British conductor Finnegan Downie Dear, also making his Opera Australia debut, alongside Orchestra Victoria, the Opera Australia Chorus and Opera Australia Children’s Chorus.
Puccini’s famous score will bring its familiar themes of love, youth and friendship to a production shaped by a new generation of Australian creative talent.
La Bohème runs from 7 to 18 November at the Regent Theatre. Visit Opera Australia for tickets and performance details.
