A solo exhibition of personal works from Melbourne-based Academy Award winning film maker and artist, Adam Elliot, is set to open at a Brunswick gallery in October.
The All the Lonely People exhibition will run at Beinart Gallery on Victoria Street from 27 October to 17 November.
Elliot is an acclaimed Australian filmmaker known for his unique stop-motion animated films. His work often explores themes of human frailty, disability, and isolation with a blend of humor and pathos.
Elliot’s distinct style involves hand-crafted clay animation, creating a tactile and emotive aesthetic. His short film Harvie Krumpet (2003) won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, catapulting him to international recognition. He continued to explore his signature style in his feature film Mary and Max (2009), a poignant story about an unlikely pen friendship. Elliot’s films are celebrated for their depth, authenticity, and darkly whimsical storytelling.
This exhibition will shift the focus to his deeply personal and introspective artworks, which will include intimate drawings and two dimensional clay works that offer a window into his inner world. These have often remained hidden from public view.
Elliot said “Making stop-motion films is incredibly complex, tedious, time-consuming, and horrendously expensive. Drawing, on the other hand, is virtually free. If I had to choose between the two, I’d choose the drawings over the films in a second.”
