Thousands of free doughnuts will be handed out across four Melbourne shopping centres this winter as Greatest of the Mall returns with limited-edition creations inspired by local communities, food culture and some of the city’s best-loved flavours.
Running from 27 June to 12 July, the annual celebration of Melbourne mall culture will take over The Glen, Bayside, Broadmeadows Central and Box Hill Central, combining limited-edition doughnuts, prize giveaways and plenty of local flavour.
Presented by Vicinity Centres in partnership with Melbourne Food & Wine and food entrepreneur Raph Rashid, the event shines a spotlight on the food court favourites and community influences that help shape each centre’s identity.
This year, Rashid has teamed up with a group of Melbourne food creators to design four exclusive doughnuts inspired by the character of each location.
The Glen will serve up a Milk Tea Brûlée Doughnut created with Alice Bennett of Miss Trixie Drinks Tea, while Bayside gets a Pink Lamington collaboration with Dani Venn. Broadmeadows Central will feature a Baklava Cheesecake Doughnut created with Jonathan Williams of Dub Eats Everything, while Box Hill Central’s offering is a Yuzu Glaze with Matcha Cream Doughnut created alongside Melbourne Foodie.
During special activation days, Rashid will be on site handing out 600 free doughnuts at each centre between 11am and 2pm, while shoppers can also spin the Snacc Spin Wheel for the chance to win gift cards and snack prizes.
Explaining the inspiration behind the creations, Rashid said: “Each centre has its own personality and honestly, its own flavour. I just had to find it and put it in a doughnut. Every recipe has been designed to reflect the character of its centre, resulting in flavours that are fun, unexpected and unlike anything you’d typically find in a doughnut cabinet.”
The celebrations extend beyond doughnuts, with shoppers also able to enter the Eat & Win competition for the chance to win one of five $500 centre gift cards available at each participating centre.
